HARDENS LONDON 2006

Ratings- Food 2, Service 3, Ambiance 2, (rating 1-5 with 1 highest)
An "unusual situation" (within a "beautiful" food hall) contributes to the appeal of this Farringdon 'one-off' - be it for a "tasty" brunch, for "superb" cakes, or a "very good" light lunch.

STARCHEFS.COM

Serious gourmets will love the retail side of Flaneur Food Hall & Restaurant near Smithfield Market. The well stocked shelves have luxuries from round the world, and the dining tables are set smack in the middle. Choose from the small menu or the takeaway counter. The mouth watering desserts taste as good as they look.

WHICH NATIONAL GOOD FOOD GUIDE 2006

Through 'sheer flamboyance and nerve' Flaneur's warehouse conversion marries industrial scale with domestic feel in a conflation of high class deli and a restaurant providing simple brasserie cooking with a strong Italian influence. Treatments are straightforward: salt cod, rocket, white beans, capers and chilli, say, or parsnip and chestnut soup, being typical starters. Mains take a tender and flavoursome boiled organic gammon well complemented by lentils and parsley sauce - our inspection's high spot - or fried sea bass with saffron, mussels and shallots.

THE TIMES 10 TOP DELI RESTAURANTS FEBRUARY 2006

Lined with shelves brimful of produce. Flaneur Food Hall is a stunning setting in which to eat. A creamy asparagus soup topped with a fried quails egg makes a lovely starter, ahead of a spot-on grilled veal chop with crispy pancetta.

TIME OUT LONDON EATING & DRINKING 2006

*Flaneur Food Hall
This gorgeous food hall-cum-restaurant on the less-than-gorgeous Farringdon Road is a gem. Tall shelves are lined with well-sourced gourmet products; wines, baked goods, cheeses, charcuterie and deli dishes are further foodie draws. If you'd rather eat in than take away, there are stylish, blond-wood, tables set into alcoves, overlooking the street or at the back. The quality of the produce shines through in the menu: terrine of leek with gorgonzola rarebit crostini was delicate yet flavoursome, while san danielle ham with char-grilled peaches , rocket and balsamic was a colourful culinary joy. For mains, pan-fried calf's liver with lentils, bacon and garlic, cooked to smoky perfection. Babies and children admnitted. Booking advisable. No Smoking. Takeaway service.
